Journalism
My journalism career includes experience as a print, digital and broadcast journalist for several news organizations in Michigan, most recently, the Detroit News, one of Detroit's two major dailies.
My career started as a staff writer for the Hillsdale Daily News in Hillsdale, Michigan where I covered a third of Hillsdale County, including the city of Hillsdale, six townships, two villages, and the education beat. As a member of a small staff, I was expected to produce three stories daily and learned to write quickly and accurately under tight deadlines. I also learned other aspects of producing the newspaper, including taking my own photographs and assisting with page proofing.
After a year in Hillsdale, I moved to Detroit to learn broadcast journalism by taking an internship at WDET Detroit Public Radio. There I learned to write news for the ear and train my voice for radio, eventually working my way up to voicing my own news spots and give live radio broadcasts.
While interning at WDET, I also worked as a freelance journalist for AnnArbor.com, one of the country’s first nearly all-digital newspapers. As a general assignment reporter, I covered a range of topics including education, government, crime, events and features, though writing on a digital level that focused on reader engagement and Search Engine Optimization.
In November 2013, I began working again as a freelance journalist at AnnArbor.com, covering general assignments. In March 2013, I also began working as a freelance journalist for Reuters' Detroit office, breaking the news of Detroit's decision to turn down an invitation to host the 2024 Olympics. At this time, I also began working as a journalist for Mode Shift, also in Detroit, reporting on issues relating to non-motorized transportation and community building.
While most of my career since then has been in public relations, I returned to my journalism roots in 2021 as a freelance arts and entertainment reporter for the Detroit News.
